Answers before you drive
Everything drivers ask us about California smog checks, in plain English.
How long does a smog check take?
Most cars, SUVs and pickups are done in about 20 to 30 minutes once they're in the bay. Diesels, RVs and Clean Truck Check tests can take a little longer. No appointment needed: just pull in.
Do I need a smog check to renew my DMV registration?
If your renewal notice says "Smog Certification Required," yes. Most California vehicles need one every two years, when they change owners, and when they're registered here for the first time from out of state. Results go to the DMV electronically, so there's no paperwork to carry over.
Which vehicles need a smog check in California?
Gas and hybrid vehicles from 1976 and newer, and diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer with a GVWR of 14,000 lbs or less. Vehicles eight model years old or newer usually skip the two-year check (you pay a smog abatement fee instead), but can still need one when sold. Electric vehicles, motorcycles and gas vehicles 1975 and older are exempt.
My notice says "STAR station required." Can you certify it?
Yes. We're a STAR Certified station, so we can test and certify directed vehicles, including ones the state flags as gross polluters. Bring your notice and pull in.
What should I bring?
Your vehicle, your DMV renewal notice if you have one, and payment. Drive for 15 to 20 minutes before you arrive so the engine is warm, and make sure the check engine light is off. A lit check engine light is an automatic fail.
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Walk right in. No appointment needed during business hours: Mon–Fri 9 AM–5 PM · Sat 9 AM–2 PM · Sun closed. For semis and other heavy-duty trucks needing Clean Truck Check, call (909) 954-8003 first so we're ready for you.
Do you take cash or card?
Cash and major debit/credit cards are accepted. Price depends on your vehicle, so call (909) 954-8003 for today's price before you head over.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
You get your results and a straight explanation. We're Test Only, so there's no repair pitch. Take it to any licensed repair shop, then come back for your retest. You may also qualify for California's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP), which helps pay for emissions repairs.
What is Clean Truck Check (CTC)?
Clean Truck Check is CARB's emissions testing program for heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR, including semis and big diesel trucks, that operate in California. It's separate from a regular smog check. We run CTC tests. Call us to line one up.
